Indonesia-Israel relations was higlighted in the last two months of the US President Donald Trump's term in the office. Two US officials at the time revealed if Trump still have two months more, there will be an agreement between Indonesia and Israel.

For Daniel Greenberg, a long-time horse and cattle rancher and also former adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Arab affairs, Indonesia is a very important country for Israel. Otherwise, Israel is world known for its technologies advances and thus can become a bridge for Indonesia so to acquire and apply these most innovative technologies in the field of agricultural crops, water, environment and wastewater treatment, medicine, biotechnology and more.

"One of Israel passions is centered on research and better methods of agriculture and technologies and all this can be made available to Indonesia," said Daniel Greenberg in an exclusive interview with Faisal Assegaf from Albalad.co via email yesterday.

The interview was arranged by Steve Stein, long time advocate on Indonesia affairs, businessman, philanthropist, representing Haigud Society for Transfer of Technology, a Jerusalem based NGO among others, airlifted a B747-200 cargo aircraft with 75 ton of humanitarian aid for the victims of Aceh Indonesia following the tsunami on Dec 26, 2004.

Excerpts:

Can you explain how important is Indonesia for Israel?

Indonesia is, first of all, a source of inspiration for Israel as for how to manage successfully a pluricultural and plurilingual population. This link between Indonesia and Israel can become a great bridge leading to closer relations between peoples of different religions and it seems to me, that an economic cooperation between Indonesia and Israel will contribute to a wider exchange in many fields for both countries.

On a personal note, and as the son of a family who has been deeply rooted in the land of Israel, since 1502, first in Jerusalem and then in Hebron, two core and biblical cities for the Jewish people, I am proud to tell you about the loyal and intense relationship my ancestors and I have always maintained with Arabs living next to us while among my closest friends are Muslim Arabs with whom we have warm contacts for a few generations.

Otherwise how important is Israel for Indonesia?

Israel is world known for its technologies advances and thus can become a bridge for Indonesia so to acquire and apply these most innovative technologies in the field of agricultural crops, water, environment and wastewater treatment, medicine, biotechnology and more.

Israel has always been an incubator for the production and cultivation of advanced technologies in most fields. One of Israel passions is centered on research and better methods of agriculture and technologies and all this can be made available to Indonesia.

According to Adam Boehler and two other US officials, Indonesia were in talks with Israel for normalization. Is it confirmed?

According to reliable sources with whom I am involved, it seems that there are special cooperation ties on special issues between Indonesia and Israel. There are some ups and some downs when both Israel and Indonesia are affected by processes taking place in the world, or with national issues for each country.

But times change, attitudes too, and we could refer to the renewal of economic relations between the US and China. And for the story, let us remind that some years ago, in 1972, Israel and Indonesia played football together on the Asian Championship like good old friends.

Can you elaborate about the meeting between Indonesia, US, and Israel in Singapore in December last year?

I know that over the years, there were many meetings between Israel and Indonesia and guests in very senior positions in the Indonesian government have visited Israel. Former US administration was very keen regarding Indonesia to be part of the Abraham Accords. Personally, being convinced of how significant is the exchange and economic cooperation between Indonesia and Israel, I do hope, that the signing of a MoU between the countries will take in the very near future.

How about great efforts by Israel and Indonesia to strengthen ties?

I think that the renewal of Indonesia's ties and economic cooperation with Israel can lead to great benefits and profits for both countries and these ties will have their impact on the whole Middle East.

Over the years, history proves that the world has gone through many upheavals when a long time ago, gold was the source of wealth and happiness, before being replaced by oil as a world leader and so on. Today the world's leading product is advanced technology and natural gas -both these products are now available in Israel.

I believe efforts to renew these ties must be extensive and persistent regardless of other countries, in a context of bi-directional ties and economic cooperation. Indonesia is a very large country spread over vast territories and yet it has managed to settle democratic and economic and stability over many years.

Indonesia-Israel cooperation would be really fruitful, and let's mention that for generation many people in Israel live side by side with Muslims, knowing each other way of life and nurturing mutual respect.

Two US officials said if Trump still has two months later, Indonesia will agreed to normalize relations with Israel. Do you think so?

That was the plan.

In what level the relationship between Indonesia and Israel could be in near future?

According to my opinion and experience, I think we need to start and open up the economies of both countries, talk and find ways to cooperate, while the leaders on both sides will join and promote the process of rapprochement.

Did Israel setup target to normalize relations with Indonesia?

I am personally convinced that Israel is very interested in normalizing relations with Indonesia and is even willing to start a regular and respectful normalization of relations on both sides. I would also remind that normalized relations between the two countries will bring regional peace in the Middle East and closer bonds between the various communities.

Will Israel exploit US and the UAE to pressure Indonesia to have a formal ties with Israel?

I am sure that a country like Indonesia is not willing nor have any need to be pressured as to renew ties. Indonesia is surely aware, like Israel, of the benefits involved in these ties renewal between the two countries.

Of course Israel's recent agreements with four muslim countries can continue to nurture and expand this cooperation and contribute greatly to the economies of the countries involved.

Will Israel help Indonesian palm oil to enter market in the Gulf countries?

Israel can contribute greatly to the sales of Indonesian palm oil in all countries of the world including the Gulf countries as Israel trades with most countries of the World and can be the gateway to Europe and America and the US. Israel has active business centers and contacts in international markets and the Israeli government supports cooperation between countries.

For instance, trade between Israel and the UAE has reached a total value of over 1 billion dirham (almost NIS 900 million) or US$ 350 million over the course of the five months since the normalization agreement was reached between the countries. Israel and the United Arab Emirates agreed in August to normalise diplomatic relations.
